AstroFire – Classic Asteroid-blasting Arcade Game
Review by on
A short while ago I took a look at the ORT Software-developed game Astrogeddon and found it to be a fun, addictive arcade game. The goal in Astrogeddon is quite simple: you have to destroy everything in sight. You must go through the game’s 100 levels, pick up powerups, and fight against more than 20 different types of alien spacecrafts.

I now switch my attention to another ORT Software-developed game, one that is very similar to Astrogeddon. I put the spotlight on AstroFire, a classic asteroid-blasting game. Why would I want to do that? As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve always had an affinity for shoot’em up arcade games that put you in control of a space ship and take you for a ride in outer space where you have to shoot everything in sight.

In AstroFire you have to fight your way through more than 75 levels and you have to fight against 18 different types of enemy spacecrafts.

Before you go get AstroFire and put it to the test, take a look at the technical details presented below:
Download – the download weighs in at 915KB, which is quite lightweight. At such a lightweight download size, it will only take a moment to get AstroFire off the web and onto your computer, even if you have to contend with a less than spectacular internet connection.
Supported OS – at the time of writing this and according to the developer, AstroFire provides support for Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows ME, and Windows XP. You can play AstroFire on Vista and Windows 7, but only if you use DOSBox. Details on how to use DOSBox are available here.
Limitations – limited number of levels in the trial version.

The bottom line is that AstroFire is a fun asteroid-blasting arcade game, but then so is Astrogeddon. If I’d have to choose, I would choose Astrogeddon over AstroFire. Astrogeddon is the newer, better version of AstroFire; it features more levels, more alien space crafts, cool powerups, and runs on Windows 7 without the need of DOSBox.

Pros
  • Lightweight download
  • 75 levels
  • 18 different types of enemy crafts

Cons
  • Free to try (limited number of levels)
  • Needs DOSBox to run on Windows versions newer than XP
  • Less levels and enemy crafts than Astrogeddon
